[ hehe. he smiles in greeting, placid and affable as ever, and makes his way over, standing near where he's sitting and looking out at the horizon. ]
Mm. It's quite mysterious, isn't it? I tried to walk to the perimeter of the places we've newly found, and couldn't seem to get a bit further. It seems our little cage's only gotten a bit bigger, one way or another.
[ tsk. but! with the reading bit, the smile gets a little more playful. ] And I did. I've got a bit of a cheat for that very problem, you see.
[ Walking the entire city perimeter... can't imagine it. He doesn't doubt there's a limit, though, since even an entire city like this can easily be contained within a boundary.
But! anyways, he turns his attention to Temenos' book, trying to catch a glimpse of the title on the cover in the dim light ]
[ The sudden brightness makes Hanako squint, but the title is more than enough to wrest his attention from the knee-jerk reaction of pulling away. ]
Are you trying to map the constellations? I thought about that too, but I've never seen any of these stars or planets, or even a familiar galaxy to be able to place us anywhere specific.
[ the leader of the school mysteries does make for a nice nickname. he sounds approving! that was a smart idea. ]
Close, but not quite. Rather, I spoke to someone in town who told me something quite interesting today, and after combing through the library extensively, I couldn't find any sort of news slips on the matter. The more that I researched, the less that I found, and while there are grains of truth to many stories, I find it best to disprove the obvious in as many ways as possible, just in case.
All of that to say that supposedly, the moon fell right out of the sky and caused all of this damage. [ gesturing up at the moon up overhead, a little more deadpan: ] As you can see.
And somebody put it back in the sky? I don't know how to break this to you, but I don't think you need to do much research to know that if the moon crashed into the earth, the entire planet would be demolished, not just the city. Maybe they meant a piece of the moon? Or a meteor?
Yes, I agree entirely. It does sound insane - but, like you've said, there may just be a grain of truth. So, I was curious to see if I might find any other incidents that were similar, and not on such a grand scale, like a meteor.
[ do they have meteors in octopath? i don't know. fantasy is hell ] But so far, there's not much recorded.
I wouldn't think so. The largest occurrence you would find would likely be the meteor that caused the extinction of the dinosaurs. Almost everything else, [ he touches a hand to his pants pocket ] burns up in the atmosphere until it's too small to cause very much damage, or otherwise lands somewhere uninhabited.
[ That said, he still wants to see that book. Grabby hands, give, please, ]
[ you know that meme where its like "if you feed a peasant a dorito they'll be flavor blasted" its like that but with modern knowledge
the future is wild. anyway he will let him see the book! the light orb on his fingertips bounces a bit and he holds it over his head like a lamp so he can see properly! it's a book about stars and space and astrological occurrences that i am definitely making up. ]
The dinosaurs. Of course, people have other theories about what happened, but a meteor makes the most sense.
[ That probably doesn't mean anything to Temenos though, if he's getting a vacant stare at "dinosaurs." The book's contents I'm going to assume at least line up with what Hanako knows about stars and space on a general scientific level, and any other day he probably would have enjoyed reading it.
...
Gives the book back. ]
No, I'm pretty sure you'd just be wasting your time trying to find answers in here. Something like this has to be caused by the supernatural, not science.
[ listen if it was called a king iguana and not a dinosaur, now that might have made more sense!!!
he lets him look through the book, keeping the light steady and still, and makes a thoughtful noise. ]
Mm. The supernatural, hm? [ there's a bit of a smile as he takes the book back, making a graceful gesture to let the warm light dissipate. ] And you are the expert. What would you theorize?
[ looks at Temenos for a moment, then looks away to resume staring at the sky ]
...Number Four is able to create a world just like this, bring people into it without their knowledge, and strip them of all power they used to have. Regardless of which supernatural controls the boundary, it's all the same: if we find the one responsible and destroy what is most important to them, the boundary will shatter.

...Something like that! But I can't see how far out the city goes from here.
[ He tried the subway, but that just loops back around, not helpful ]
Did you come up here to read? The moon isn't nearly bright enough for that.

Is iiiiiiiiiiitt... a flashlight?

[ both to dedication and to the flashlight. more like an insatiable curiosity and also growing up in a mountain town, but that's besides the point.
he makes a little noise, a hum, and says: ] Holy light.
[ and a little orb of light appears on the tips of his fingers, pure white and bright! it illuminates the title of the book - astrological events. ]
