Five minutes feels like a lifetime, especially with no agency to flee, and by the time the memory snaps closed with a shut, he's curled in on himself, sobbing. ]
[ she's immediately on him the moment he curls in on himself. the memory is violent, and jolyne swears she can still smell the sting of blood, westwood's fetid breath, the snap of stone free as it retreated back into her tired body, rebuilding what it siphoned out to fight with. she can't help it. she had to live, she had to live so badly—for emporio, for her father... for everyone.
her hand comes to rest on his back, to guide him close if he allows her. ]

[ is it okay? is it really? her hand is trembling a little anyways. ]
[ His shoulders jolt violently when Jolyne touches him, having to forcibly pull himself back to the present and tell himself that it's over, just like a dream, a nightmare, but it's over.
Pain he's used to. But fear clings to him like tar, clogging his throat, choking him.
Bright wet eyes turn up to look at Jolyne, as if silently asking her if it's really okay? That wasn't his nightmare, after all. ]
[ her eyes are a little wet. she's nineteen. she's only nineteen, but hanako is even younger, isn't he? she's basically an adult. she's the adult here and now, so when she feels the jolt, she just rubs gently, pulls him closer. part of her, is perhaps trembling harder than she thinks. ]

[ there's a ferociousness behind her words, one of her hands shifting a little to just cup his face very gently, like she's done this before, like she's practiced. her voice is pillowed, like claws sheathed, but prepared to protect at any moment. ]
I survived... and I'm sorry it was so ugly. But I couldn't die. I had to get back to a boy just like you, y'know...
[ They're nonsensical words that he mutters, letting himself get pulled towards her, pulling her towards himself for a tight hug, not realizing if it hurts her more than it hurts him. It doesn't matter why to him. Whether she had somebody to go back to, whether she had a reason to join such a stupid thing as a "fight club." The only thing that matters is that she survived, that she's here, right now.
Why? How? the questions get stuck in his throat, and he can't swallow them down.

[ nonsense. it's all in the past, there's nothing he can do about that. but still, he wants to pay back all that hurt. ]
[ she just smiles gently, more than content to take the hug, squeezing him back as much as is comfortable. there's a warmth in her smile, the kind that appreciates him, but it's distant in the way that she regrets that he ever had to see her claw and bite and scrape her way through violence to survive. ]
It... they threw me in super max for a while - it's where they put the real troublemakers in jail. So everyone in there? They were being held for doing some pretty awful stuff. I got thrown there because I tried to escape.
[ she tilts her head a little, just makes a slight :nyeh: cat face. ] The guy in the uniform there... his name was Westwood. He was a guard who pretty much terrorized and beat all of us.
[ "Good," his expression says, bitter and angry. Whatever Jolyne did to get herself landed in jail in the first place doesn't matter to him, not when the people he likes matter more to him than the crimes they commit. ]
[ A person like that, he wouldn't be able to let leave alive either. Just recalling the man's face forces another wave of anger to wash over him, that he has to force back down because Jolyne obviously doesn't want to dwell on something like this. ]
It's okay. [ Seeing it wasn't the worst part. That was feeling it, being there, that was worse. ] I'm okay. I'll be okay. What about you?
