Wait--you meant the circus thing? [ laughs ] No, no, she didn't die then. I...right after I cut the line, I snapped out of it and flew down to save her. She was fine. After that, at least.

But just to set the record straight, that happened about a year before she really died. I would not and did not kill her because I was being mind controlled by some stupid goth clown with a fancy toy. I killed her myself, in control of myself and sound of mind, with my own two hands and a number two pencil.

[ He gives Danny a look of abject horror for a quick moment before he realizes that Danny doesn't mean he literally stabbed Sam to death with a pencil like a stake through the heart, but that he's talking about that stupid test that still makes Hanako's stomach roil. ]

Ha... How does that even happen? I've never met somebody who's as badly cursed as you are.

That's what happens when you live in a town full of ghosts and think you have to play "hero" and fight them off.

[ Can't Danny just let the ghosts haunt his town? He wants to ask this, but already knows the answer. After all, his entire job is to maintain balance between the two realms, try not to let the supernaturals mess around with the humans too badly. ]

Don't your ghosts have a council or anything to keep each other in line?

There was a Ghost King. But he was such a maniac that he was locked in a sarcophagus for good.

And the others only bother to interfere if messes with their precious "timeline." Something like ghosts wreaking havoc on a town or lives being ruined is beneath them.

I don't have to be a "good" ghost, just a better one! My job is to keep the peace. That means letting the supernaturals have their fun, but stopping them before it goes too far!

Why "keep the peace"? You could just let them run rampant. It would be easier for you and less risky.

The world has a balance and order to it. If supernaturals ran rampant and killed all the living, the world would fall apart. Surely even you see that.
